I don’t know about you but I pretty much LOVE the refresh button on all my electronic devices. Any time I can wipe my little digital notepad clean to please my OCD self, I am one happy camper! It sure seems a lot harder to do that in life though, doesn’t it? I think most of us get caught up with our busy schedules and the constant rush from one place to the next that we forget we need a refresh too! When I was a kid I had these refreshes constantly (thanks, mom!), and they almost felt annoying. I can still hear myself voicing my frustration to my mom, “I’m BORED!” God bless her for not slapping my butt and putting me to work. I guess she knew I wouldn’t always have the luxury of being bored and she let me enjoy it while it lasted. Oh, the days. Now, I know how precious those times were. I realize that now I am older and things only get busier and instead of more relaxing, I get less!
I know schedules, planning and the consistent hustle are part of life. I also know some of you are moms and a refresh sounds like some beautiful dream too far up in the clouds to dwell on. But before you write me off as a dreamer; take a moment to try one or two of these tips. You may be surprised at what a refresh could do for you!
6 Secrets for a Refresh
1. Fresh Morning Air
Make a point to take a walk in the morning air. Our busy lives tend to force us indoors for the mornings, so take advantage of that cool crisp fragrant air that can only be enjoyed in the morning. Make a point to look at the details and truly appreciate ALL of nature. Find every color and pick out every scent. When I took the time to do this, I was in shock at how many colorful wild flowers I saw! It sounds silly, but I was excited about all the colors of the rainbow that I saw just in fields by the road. You don’t have to live next to a botanical garden to see the beauty in nature. HONEYSUCKLE! You guys, it is everywhere! Breathe deep.
2. Plant Something
I look forward to spring every year, knowing I finally get to see color in my yard and plant my sweet little herbs in the back yard. Yes, I will forget to water them for a few days and have to nurse them back to health…and some won’t make it ?; but before all of that happens, I get to plant their cute little selves. I don’t know if it is the general hope that spring brings, or the sweet little blossoms on everything. Maybe it is the feeling of cool soil under my fingertips as I gently press it around my sweet basil plant, but I wish I could bottle that feeling.
3. Grab A Good Sweat in the Sun
Yes, I know this may sound counterproductive but I promise it isn’t! Steven and I were outside almost all day this last weekend working in the yard & building a raised herb garden. A good sweat on a warm day with a cool breeze seemed to be exactly what the doctor ordered. It almost felt like all the stress and worry of the week was leaving my body while the warm sun was soaking my skin with Vitamin D. I also recommend a quick splash of cold water from the garden hose to cool down your toes 🙂
4. Responsibilities Vacation
Before you put your little kiddos in the other room and tell them you are taking a vacation from your responsibilities 0_0, let me say this one may need to be adjusted to your specific circumstances! We don’t have children but Saturdays are when I do most of my recipe planning, grocery shopping, cooking, photography, and the many other details that tend to come with my blog. I LOVE Saturdays. And although I really come alive when I get to work on my blog and my creative goals, it can get quite exhausting trying to balance it with my life and regular job as well as getting some time with Steven. For the first time since I have started the blog, I took the weekend off, guilt-free. That last part is important. I think sometimes we push ourselves to the point of exhaustion that we take some time off, but the whole time we have this guilty feeling in the back of our mind and can’t even enjoy that we have a BREAK. (<-not that I know anything about that) I encourage you to take that responsibilities vacation in whatever way you can and take it physically AND mentally. Put it on the backburner and forget about it for the day.
5. Hobby Therapy
Enjoy your hobby for just you. In case you didn’t know, we eat everything you find on this blog, and most of the time we are eating it multiple times before you even see it. With only the two of us to devour everything, 95% of the time our meals are made with the blog in mind. Since you guys LOVE easy yummy dinners, I do my best to focus on creating recipes to fit that category, which doesn’t leave much room for anything else. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE it. But it has taken away a little bit of the freedom and creativity that I used to have when I just cooked to cook. No measuring, no testing, no scribbling ingredients while stirring and no ladders in the kitchen to photograph that sizzling skillet. This last weekend, I reexamined that time. When I was in the kitchen, I was cooking for the fun of it and renewed my passion for cooking and a hobby that has turned into so much more. If you have a creative hobby that has turned into a source of income or has been profitable for you, don’t forget to enjoy it just for you sometimes. Bake some cookies just to enjoy them, not for the next bake sale. Craft something for your home, not just to sell on Etsy. Sew a cute cover for a pillow on your couch, those pants can wait to be hemmed!
You probably could have guessed this last one. It seems like our relationships are, sadly, what suffers most in our day-to-day busyness. It seems quite a shame, because this is where the true ‘Refresh Button’ lies. Whether your significant other, your best friend, your child, a parent or a relative you don’t spend enough time with, decide to block time out to just laugh and enjoy. Don’t talk finances or work or politics. Talk about memories, or things you have in common, or laugh about that ridiculous meme you saw on Facebook. Allow yourself to enjoy time with that person, because you love them and there is a reason they are important in your life. This last weekend, I forced myself to shut down the outside issues. I just dated my husband. We didn’t discuss bills or technical blog stuff when we were dating, so I didn’t bring any of that up. We just laughed and walked and hopped on the dirt bike for some exploring and took our adult hats off for the weekend. It felt like summer break for my heart and truly brought the refresh I needed.
Why You Should Try These 6 Secrets
I didn’t realize how therapeutic this weekend was until I woke up Monday morning. First of all, I was smiling Monday morning. I repeat. I was SMILING on a Monday morning. My mind had a total sense of clarity and I had an energy I haven’t felt in a long time. I went about my day with an eagerness to learn, finish tasks and think creatively! By Tuesday, I was shocked that I still had energy and was genuinely happier about life. Creative ideas were popping into my head, I had the energy to be productive and focus which actually made me accomplish more! I truly thought I was going to feel behind all week and playing catch up, but here it is Thursday and I am going strong! Poor Steven has heard me comment, at least 5 times, how much energy I have and how great this weekend was for me!
I realize these secrets may not work for everyone, but they certainly helped me so I encourage you to try some of these or give yourself some time off to discover what gives you the REFRESH! If our electronic devices need a refresh…so do we!
