Berry Sweet Tea, you guys.  This is what you need to chill out after these busy spring days.  BYE hot cocoa…we will see you sometime in the fall.  Sweet chilled black tea with the subtle sweet hint of season-perfect strawberries and blackberries + naturally sweetened with Lite&Sweet (<-new favorite).  I’ve taken some time to hang out with this new tea love of mine and this is definitely going to be a long term thing.

It has been my choice way to celebrate all the excitement happening around these parts! We get to see family this weekend, attend my VERY FIRST food conference next week, sight-see Salt Lake City, Utah & even get to meet blogging buddies! (more on them in a second…)

Summer or not, it is hot here in Georgia and a glass of sweet tea is a big weakness of mine.  We usually keep things simple and in the past I have used pure cane sugar, but have been tempted to use some sugar substitutes (<-calories y’all, don’t judge).  I don’t know about you, but for me, that has always been a bad decision.  It’s difficult to determine how much to use, since it certainly isn’t the same amount that you use for regular sugar.  OH heavens. That would probably be fatal 0_0.

Is it just me or do those “no calorie” sweeteners always seem to leave this not-pleasant aftertaste in your mouth?  Like, okay that may have had no calories but I am thinking I would prefer them over what is in my mouth right now.

Well, friend, you can kiss those nasty-tasting, ratio-confusing days goodbye because I have the perfect solution to your naturally sweetened-loving dreams and it is this Berry-infused black tea sweetened with my newest find: Lite&Sweet<3

Reasons to Love Tea with Lite&Sweet

We are normally on the same page with this new-fangled stuff.  We think…umm what is that…  But, the nice folks at Xlear sent me a cute little perfectly packaged bag (thanks xlear!) to try and my change-resistant self could resist no longer!  Naturally, that means you guys are going to hear all about it because this Berry Tea we are making is super special due to said deliciousness of the natural sweetener: Lite&Sweet ?

But other than ‘Brittany said to’ here are some other reasons for you to try out our new Lite&Sweet friend!

  • NO after taste!  I didn’t quite believe it at first and then I tried it and they get two thumbs up from me and my highly sensitive taste-tester.  I made one batch with regular sugar and one batch with Lite&Sweet and -no taste difference whatsoever.  Just delicious sweet tea.
  • 1:1 ratio.  Math is not my strong suit.  There is a reason I talk about food and you will find zero equations or formulas on this blog. 1) that would be weird and 2) the math would be incorrect.  So, the idea of trying to calculate how much fake powdery substance to add in my drink compared to how much sugar I throw in, is just a circumstance that realistically won’t be happening in my kitchen.  You awesome chemistry folks can save your skills for the lab and let’s keep it simple and fun in da’ kitchen. If you use a half cup of sugar, you use a half cup of Lite&Sweet.  End of boring story.
  • Low Calorie & Low Glycemic index.  Woah…whaaa?? I know, I stay away from complicated things on this blog, but glycemic index is something diabetics are very aware of and will be happy to know that this little blend of natural sweeteners, xylitol and erythritol, is level 3, meaning some sweet enjoyment for everyone without feeling guilty!  And for those of us pretending pool days are not right around the corner,? Lite&Sweet has 75% less calories than sugar!  Basically, we can eat cookies by the pool.Berry Sweet Tea-a naturally sweetened fruity black tea that is simple to make and features the all-natural sweetener Lite&Sweet. All these reasons were the perfect incentive to make my sweet tea indulgence into a guilt-free treat!  This recipe is simple, just like we like it, and easily adaptable to use your favorite fruits, but we seem to have a lot of strawberries and blackberries in our produce department, so they were the best fit here.

Berry Sweet Tea

Author:
Serves: ½ gallon
Ingredients
  • 1 large tea bag (such as Lipton)
  • 4 cups water
  • ½ cups blackberries (mashed)
  • 1¼ cups strawberries (mashed)
  • ¾ cup Lite&Sweet
Instructions
  1. In a small sauce pot, bring water and mashed fruit to a boil.
  2. Add tea bag to the boiling water mixture and dunk a few times before allowing to steep.
  3. Remove from heat and allow to sit for 5-7 minutes.
  4. While tea is steeping, add Lite&Sweet to a small ½ gallon container (or similar).
  5. Place a mesh strainer over the opening of the container and pour tea through it to separate tea from berries.
  6. Stir to dissolve sugar and chill or serve over ice.
Notes
-3/4 cup Lite&Sweet gave the tea a perfectly sweetened flavor to me, but make sure you sample it before it cools and add more if desired.
-Depending on how strong you like your tea will depend on how long you allow the tea to steep. 5 minutes gave a mildy strong tea flavor but closer to 7 minutes produced a much stronger tea.
